WINDSCREEN'S UNDER TEST
Windscreen options.............

Most people have found the windscreen
designs of the Spyder, both standard and touring screens,
somewhat lacking. I am currently running the BRP touring
screen and have found it less than satisfactory.
Picture below of adjustable screen's
on test, I will report and show other screen's I'm trying,
any thoughts!! Jeff
Varioscreen
Vario Touringscreen
These screens are a great improvement
on either the standard or the touring screens from BRP,
I have coverd many miles and they both reduce fatigue,
but do take some adjusting to get the right angle for
less wind noise, I had noticed some back ache on long
runs but not any more. With regard to looks the Vario
Touringscreen is the best, the spoiler is quite cool
but for me the taller Varioscreen is the one I shall
use although for winter or bad weather I think a larger
screen is needed.
These screens are well made and take
less than 10 minutes to fit so if you want the look
or protection just switch from one to the other. How
much I here you say, not bad at all when you consider
shipping. To Visit copy and paste this addess into your
browser to get straight to the catalogue or click here
and navigate manually - http://www.bikehps.com/acatalog/vario_screens_for_can-am.html
.As an exclusive offer to visitors of this web site,
HPS will offer a 10% discount on either of these
screens, when placing an order online just type spyderryder.co.uk
10% discount offer in the where did
you see us advertised field.
Many thanks to Johannes at MRA for allowing
me to test these products.

Graphic Kits
Want to stand out from the rest?
Well with the Spyder you already do however for
those that want to take it that extra step have
a look at these graphic kits .
http://www.autotrimdesign.net/items_78165.html
They come in a flames theme, a
web theme and another one I find hard to describe.
The flame theme for example is an 8 piece set
in 7 different colours. The web kit comes in colours
and a "simulated chrome". Probably not
something I would look at myself but everyone
has their own personality and the Spyder is one
way to express it.
Then again I wonder what other
colours the flame set comes in?

No Magic Neon Riser kits.
I must admit even with the 1" BRP
riser I do suffer from the "axeblade between
the shoulders" on long rides. For me (6ft)
I think its not more height I need rather than to bring
the bars back a bit.
Evan at No
Magic Neon is sending over a set of his 3"
risers for me to try out so I look forward to reviewing
this shortly. Evan has quite a range of Spyder bits
- have a look at his web site at No
Magic Neon
By all reports on the US forums these
risers make a marked improvement to the leverage as
well and many people report less effort to turn the
bars when cornering. At $199 US they seem a reasonable
cost. Stay tuned and I will let you know.
UPDATE 25/09/08
- Ok all fitted and test ridden . I guess that I can
only echo what has been said in the US forums. Previously
I was sitting close to the tank to get any bend in my
arms and I was still getting a pain between my shoulder
blades (I am 6ft with a pretty dodgy back) . Now I can
sit back in the seat, still have roughly the same body
position but bend my arms and relax my shoulders. I
guess a longer ride on Sunday will tell me more but
it seems great so far. Definitely less effort
to turn the bars now and cornering is easier.
Downsides?? Nothing significant. Sure
I am nervous cutting of the bars and clamping the risers
on but realistically this sort of clamp fitting has
been used for years on motorcycles. Rerouting the cables
took a little effort and for a while I thought there
was no way the reverse cable would make it but it did
after I rearranged it (if you do this yourself ring
me and I will explain) . Sure the riding position now
looks less " sporty" - more "cruiser"
style but I am willing to put up with that to be comfortable.
I recommend them if you are not totally satisfied with
the standard bars.

Canadian
Elka Suspension for the Spyder is distibuted
by Hardiman ATV Pty Ltd on the NSW Central Coast .
Custom built and handcrafted - see a
PDF brochure.
They have remote reservoirs and claim less body
roll, 1"more front suspension travel, a smoother
ride, tuned for the riders weight and riding style,
better stability and traction.
Front shocks sold as a pair and all
come with a remote reservoir:
$1295.00 for Preload and compression adjustability.
$1695.00 for Preload, compression, rebound adjustability.
$1895.00 for Preload plus Hi and Low speed compression
adjustability.
$1995.00 for Preload plus Hi and Low speed compression
and rebound adjustability.
Rear shock is sold with remote reservoir
$1495.00 for Preload, compression, rebound adjustability.
$1695.00 for Preload plus Hi and Low speed compression
and rebound adjustability.
Note* HIGH- AND LOW-SPEED COMPRESSION
ADJUSTMENT
Elka Suspension’s Elite compression adjustment
is an internal cartridge with two distinct circuits
that control the hydraulic resistance for both high-velocity
and low-velocity oil displacement. This enables very
advanced fine-tuning for different types of impacts
that would otherwise require the rider to make a compromise
between a more comfortable softer suspension and a high-performance
harder suspension.
With our Elite compression adjustment, the rider can
have the suspension set to react differently for high-speed
situations and low-speed situations at the same time.
SIMPLY PUT, THE ELITE COMPRESSION ADJUSTMENT IS LIKE
HAVING TWO SHOCKS IN ONE: IT REACTS DIFFERENTLY ACCORDING
TO THE VELOCITY OF THE IMPACT
All Elka shocks are custom built to
rider weight and style of riding, they are built to
order and they will take 2-3 weeks to receive once
the order is placed. For more info phone: (02)
4353 3622 and tell them you saw it here.
I plan to put a set on my Spyder but
have to save up a few bucks first.

When I fit the Elka suspension
I also want to try the "Evoluzione"
sway bar.
"This adjustable swaybar
was developed for the performance minded owner
who would like to improve the front end feel while
maintaining a comfortable ride. this swaybar will
help to improve cornering by maintaining a more
level attitude of the spyder through corners."
Ken of Evoluzione comments- "a
stiffer bar reduces the tendency of the spyder
to want to lift the inside front tire. it has
to do with roll center (location of the bikes
center of gravity)."
UPDATE 02/10/08-
I have had the new swaybar on for just 24 hours
but it is great! I was running the front shocks
on 5 to help stop roll in corners but now have
them on 4, with the new swaybar on its softer
setting and the handling is improved - the Spyder
stays flatter in the corners. The front suspension
does not seem mushy in the corners now- much more
precise. I recomend the change!
Ken does lots of neat Spyder products
like a low-effort clutch
slave cylinder for the Can-Am Spyder. this
unit was developed to reduce the clutch effort
pull by ~20%. in addition, it also allows a smoother
engagement due to an elongated throw (much cleaner
take-offs from a stop). the kit comes complete
with easy to follow instructions and we even supply
a bleeder bottle to help you quickly finish the
job. ($140US)

Seat Skins
Like to consider an alternative to the
BRP seat skin? In a few weeks I will be fitting one
off these in "Silver Carbon" from MotoPlus.
Reportedly they are "High grade marine vinyl -
Rot-proof stitching - Installs in less than 30 minutes"
UPDATE 11/09/08 - OK my seat
skin arrived finally. Instructions were clear
and I used it as an excuse to buy an electric staple
gun figuring this would make things easier. Boy was
I wrong as the staples just bounced off the Spyder seat
pan! My recomendation would be to do what I ended up
doing - that is take it round to your local trim shop
and for $30 have an expert fit it (even his pneumatic
staple gun had a deal of trouble penetrating the set
pan). I am sure even if I could have hammered the staples
through I would not have ended up with such a wrinkle
free result. $30 well spent.
The finished result looks great and
many people have commented on the apearance. As a bonus
the seat stays quite cool (on the riders silver patch)
while sitting in the hot sun. Really sets of the Spyders
apearance especially with the colour match on the Givi
paniers, the backrest and rack..
Interested? Email Ryan - ryan@motosplus.com
Delivery from US only took around 5 days in the end.

Spyder
Front Wheels
"Industries 7" - (Shawn who
came up with the Spyder rack) have released some great
new wheels at a reasonable price- around $650 a pair-
They come in black and chrome and they would be cheaper
than the $1,000 for the BRP wheels..
UPDATE- It looks like
I can get a pallet over from Quebec by sea with a transit
time of around 45 days. This would mean we could bring
in these wheels. Would anyone be interested?? If so
black or chrome (chrome about $50 more than black)??
Let me know if
you would be interested.

Industries 7
rack to take Givi V35 bags
The Givi V35s are a high quality Italian
made pannier available via most Australian motorcycle
accessory shops. The rack to mount to the Spyder (not
an easy design) however has to come from Canada. In
Australia you have no real alternative, that I am aware
of, in a hard shell pannier.

UPDATE* -We
have racks in Australia NOW! See
more details in this PDF
file.

The only other hard luggage I am aware
of is produced in the USA by Corbin
and sells for between $1699 and $1899 US. These are
of the fixed type rather than the removable "suitcase"
style. If you look at going that way be aware that freight
costs can be an issue. I recently flew in some brackets
in a box the size of a decent paperback book and the
freight was $100. I am not aware of anyone stocking
Corbin bags in Australia.
In either case please remember the load
limits set by BRP on your Spyder . That is a total of
200kg (includes rider, pillion, luggage and the weight
of any accessories) Some people have found it can be
very easy to bottom out the rear suspension with a pillion
and luggage. I am lucky Marion only weights 50kg !!
